2010 Teen Driving Update

Teen Driving Update

Since getting off to a late start this year due to changes in the committee structure, the PBPA Teen Driving Safety Committee is proud to report several positive event that took place recently.

To get things rolling, our good friends at Chick-Fil-A sponsored a “wear your seatbelt” reward program at Powell High School.  The famous Chick-fil-A cow was at the parking lot when school finished for the day, and gave sandwich coupons to each student that was properly wearing his or her seat belts!!  Thankfully, there were only a few that didn’t have their seatbelts on, and they quickly buckled up!!

On March 11, Eric Matson and Greg Mangan presented a program to the freshman and sophomore classes at Powell High School.  The program was interactive and delivered the message about the serious business of driving, and how to overcome the distractions that lead to many crashes.

The big event for the year was the mock crash on April 29th!!  With a huge amount of help from Rural Metro, the Knox County Sheriff’s Department, the Knoxville Volunteer Rescue Squad and Lifestar, a totally realistic crash scene was staged in the parking lot of Powell High School.  The theater students were called on to play the crash victims…complete with full theatrical make-up that was so realistic it was difficult to watch.  All the students were able to witness the crash site and watch as the rescue personnel performed their duties at the scene.  Students were completely quiet during the operation, and the message was brought home when they watched bodies being put into body bags for a trip to the morgue.  The leader of the Safe Driving Club at Powell High School is Laura Whittington, and many thanks go to her for her efforts in pulling the event off.

Next year we’ll get off to a faster start and will strive to make our young people better, safer and more courteous drivers in the future!!

Congratulations to: Ian Turner and Tori Daugherty for earning 1st place overall in the men’s and women’s category!
